        Elettaria cardamomum

        Cardamom

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) is a flowering plant native to the tropical forests of Southern India and Sri Lanka. A member of the ginger family, it produces small green seed pods filled with aromatic black seeds. Known for its warm, sweet and distinctive flavour, cardamom has been used for centuries in both cooking and traditional herbal practices.

As one of the oldest traded spices in the world, cardamom became a symbol of wealth and prestige across India, the Middle East and later Europe. Still regarded as one of the world’s most expensive spices, its value reflects the delicate process of harvesting each pod by hand. In Ayurveda, it was traditionally used to freshen the breath, support digestion and promote a sense of calm. It was commonly added to herbal tonics, teas and milk-based preparations, often alongside ginger, cinnamon and other warming botanicals.

Scientific research has investigated cardamom for its potential role in heart health. In a clinical study, researchers found that daily cardamom supplementation was associated with improvements in blood pressure among adults with hypertension. While these findings are promising, further clinical studies are needed to confirm its long-term health effects.

Cardamom is found in Zen Bite — complementing cinnamon, turmeric and Reishi in a ritual bar inspired by evening rituals and moments of calm.
